Mental Health Program in Egypt (EGYMEN)
HCI is a partner within a consortium lead by Ramboll
Finnconsult-Finland and in collaboration with the third partner the
Netherlands School for Public & Occupational Health (NSPOH) during
the first phase (2002-2004). During the second phase (2005-2007), the
consortium included Ramboll Finnconsult & HCI only.
Mental Health Program is a bilateral program between the Government of Egypt and the Government of Finland.
Objective
To improve the Mental Welfare in Egypt.
Purpose
To
improve Mental Health Welfare and Provision System in Egypt including
managerial, curative, preventive and promotive components.
The program addresses 5 main components of interventions:
Component 1: Human Resource Development
Component 2: Functional Development
Component 3: Structural Development
Component 4: Community Development
Component 5: Mental Health Promotion & Prevention

- A Human Resource Strategy for mental health developed.
- Management Capabilities Improved.
- Improvement of management capabilities.
- Mental health has been integrated into the Primary Health Care.
- Coordination with EC and WHO has been established.
- A continuing medical education-program developed for mental health professionals.
- Improved functional systems and practices of the mental health care.
- Improved treatment practices in mental health care.
- Improved health management information system (HMIS).
- Improved facility management systems and practices in mental health care.
- Quality Improvement System for mental health function developed and implemented.
- A master plan for the provision of mental health services developed.
- Developed intermediate services/facilities and other alternative approaches for psychiatric care.
- Improved child and adolescent psychiatric services.
- Developed model for integrating mental health into the PHC.
- Improved awareness of people on mental health disorders.
- Improved capacities of families and communities to cope with mental problems.
- Developed Community based mental health care pilots.
- The adolescents, parents, teachers, GPs and other professionals know more about child and adolescent psychiatric problems and drug addiction in the pilot area.
- Mental health promoting plan implemented in a chosen pilot area.
